We’ll be opening “Here Comes Purple” this Saturday. This will be Megan Whitmarsh’s 3rd solo show with us here at New Image Art and we’re really excited about it!
Whitmarsh will exhibit sculpture, wall pieces and giant fabric collage. Working primarily in textiles, her re-fabrication of cultural and personal ephemera results in a rueful yet bold kind of Pop art.
Whitmarsh seeks to make her process seen in the work itself. A process that views failure and success as coexistent. Her work acknowledges the repetitiveness of culture yet still finds a compulsion to create, to be original, and to seek meaning; even if this meaning is arbitrary, personal or constantly shifting. The work is both a window opening onto these questions and evidence of her compulsions.
Whitmarsh describes her work as, “an organizing of cultural and personal ephemera which is my reckoning of the overwhelming yet compelling aspects of the universe. I want to make “new” things which admit their his- tory. New to myself and new to the world if possible.”
The opening reception for “Here Comes Purple,” takes place Saturday, September 22 at New Image Art Gal- lery from 6pm-9pm, and is open to the public. The exhibition will be on view through October 20, 2012.
Special thanks to the exhibition’s sponsor HEX for their continued support.

We’re still getting ready for “The Goblin Universe” show on June 2nd with Matt Furie and Michelle Devereux.
Here is a quick Q&A we did with Michelle:
Where did you grow up? and where are you currently living/working? I grew up in Dallas, went to school in upstate New York, lived in New York City till my apartment burned down, and now I live and work in Austin, Texas.
Have you always wanted to be an artist? or were there any other career paths you considered? Professional tap dancer, but that hasn’t worked out…yet…
Where do you draw your inspiration from? Hot guys, pizza, and rock n’ roll.
Who are your favorite artists? Those guys who make airbrush tee-shirts at the State Fair of Texas and Georgia O’Keefe.
Could you describe the work you’re putting in ”The Goblin Universe” show? Mostly portraits of fellow Austin artists who work in studios behind my house, hoverboarding on giant slicesof pizza over hypergrid spaces, and some other stuff.
What’s next for you and your art? Babes tubing in donuts, portraits of people’s heads exploding, and a series where I tar and feather inanimate objects.
On June 2nd, we’ll be opening a show called “The Goblin Universe” with Matt Furie and Michelle Devereux.
